Collagen is a structural protein which gives strength to hair, skin, nails, bones, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Collagen is needed for building proteins such as keratin, which forms hair, skin, and nails. Collagen makes up around 75% of the middle layer of your skin (the dermis) that contains the root of each individual hair and is needed for the elasticity and strength of your dermis. With age, your body becomes less efficient at making new collagen and is one reason why hair gets thinner over time. Taking collagen may help maintain a healthy dermis and reduce hair thinning.
